What is gemmology?

Gemmology is the science of studying gemstones and their properties.

How do you grade diamonds?

I use the GIA 4C grading system, assessing cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. I hold the GIA Diamonds Graduate Diploma which qualifies me to grade diamonds and identify their simulants.

Can you identify synthetic gems?

Yes, with specialized equipment and the training that I have, I can distinguish natural from synthetic coloured gemstones and diamonds accurately in person, as well as probable treatments in natural gemstones. I hold a Diploma in Gemmology from Gem-A which qualifies me to identify coloured gemstones.

Do you offer valuations (appraisals)?

No, I can recommend the best independent appraisal (valuation) services for insurance, probate or resale purposes.

How long does testing take?

I can test gemstones and jewellery in person, or provide general assessments based on information and pictures provided. These are not insurance or other valuations, it is a expert consultation and verbal assessment.
Consultations can last up to 1 hour.

What qualifications do you hold?

I am a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) with a Gemmology Diploma and hold a Gemological Institute of America (GIA) Diamonds Graduate Diploma.
